Faciliating internal workshops to uncover potential client engagement opportunities

Overview

Problem

The internal team at Roboboogie was interested in making some proactive recommendations to NordicTrack with potential research and design opportunities for the NordicTrack homepage.

However, the team didn't have a clear framework to facilitate strong focus and prioritization.

Outcomes

5+ client engagement opportunities uncovered.

Clearer research prioritization and team alignment, as well as documentation for future research opportunities.

Engaging educational opportunity on UX Research process for stakeholders.

High interest from other accounts and clients to participate in similar exercises.

Timeline

1 week

How and why?

Morale was low and opportunities were buried.

I recommended our team conduct an internal six hats workshop to promote design thinking, engagement, and collaborative brainstorming.

Objectives

My goal was to provide our internal team a structured space to critically consider potential design opportunities for the NordicTrack homepage. I wanted to discover:

What areas of the current NordicTrack Homepage could be improved?

What are the biggest questions (i.e. research opportunities) that our team has about NordicTrack users?

Based off of the team's ideas, what potential proposals could we make to the NordicTrack team for additional UX work?

Methods

Designing the workshop

I designed a Miro board with prompts, screenshots, and stickies to promote an engaging framework and creative outlet, for UX and non-UX partners.

Themes

After taking turns wearing each hat, I synthesized all the stickies into three major themes:

Disconnect from human experience.

Low trustworthiness of NordicTrack brand.

Low quality content and outdated UI.

Next Steps

Prioritizing research questions.

Once we had the design thinking juices flowing, I organized a follow-up remote Miro workshop with the same participants so that we could prioritize potential research and design opportunities

For this workshop, I had participants reflect on their experience in the six hats workshop, and share knowledge gaps and outstanding questions they may have about NordicTrack customers.

Synthesizing the data.

I organized and grouped each question stickie on the board, based on whether it was an attitude or behavior question, and if the answers to these questions would provide us with insights or validations.

This helps us determine the best research method to use to answer our question.

Documenting the results and picking a winner.

The group then voted on which question was their highest priority. After the workshop, I was then able to create a research plan proposal for the agreed upon research question.

What I learned

Having the team participate in the Six Hats Workshop BEFORE asking user questions helped the team consider a more user-centric mindset, which facilitated clearer, stronger questions and focus in our second workshop.

The sooner you start synthesis after these exercises, the better. Your brain is fresher and it's easier to remember discussion details.
